JustServe AmeriCorps works to create a just and safe community by engaging National Service Members in critical violence prevention efforts throughout Seattle/King County. As a program of Solid Ground (a community action agency dedicated to fighting poverty), we address violence issues that perpetuate poverty in our community. JustServe AmeriCorps partners with local schools, public agencies, community-based organizations and faith-based organizations to:

  • Engage National Service Members in intensive, effective community service..."getting things done for America" in the AmeriCorps issue area of public safety.
  • Help National Service Members build skills and commitment to lifelong leadership and activism to prevent violence and promote positive social change.

Founded in 1994, the Seattle JustServe AmeriCorps was originally one of five community policing/youth violence prevention pilot programs sponsored by the Department of Justice nationwide... thus the name! Today, JustServe AmeriCorps operates as an AmeriCorps*State Competitive program, sponsored by Solid Ground in partnership with the Seattle Police Department.

JustServe AmeriCorps (and all the other Solid Ground National Service programs) are committed to working in accountability to the communities we serve. We focus on undoing racism at each JustServe site project and in the way that Solid Ground recruits, trains, supports and coordinates National Service Members in our community.

Member Development: In addition to the community service objectives above, JustServe AmeriCorps and our partner sites provide ongoing, targeted Member development to help deepen Members' skills and lifelong commitment to leadership, service and activism for a just and safe community. As a result of participating in JustServe, more than 70% of Members indicate a higher level of awareness about the different approaches to civic engagement, and more than 80% of Members report that they "renewed or strengthened their lifelong commitment to service and engagement."

  • Homes for Service: Finding affordable housing on a National Service stipend can be challenging, so Washington Service Corps maintains a housing bulletin board and website that can help connect National Service Members with housing.
