Soil science has never been so thrilling! The wood shavings were flying as our enthusiastic third grade classes from Concord Elementary got their hands dirty re-bedding our worm bins this week. With a final flourish, they liberated several yogurt containers full of worms and got our compost-making process off to a wriggling start.
Science!
Teams of fifth graders got elbow deep in the scientific process as they planted experimental beds and manipulated their growing conditions with such questions as:
What would happen if we planted half a seed?
What effect would soda have on a plant?
What would happen if we covered the soil with rocks?
Tune in later for the answers to these fascinating questions….and more!
Snacks!
This week we cooked using herbs harvested from the garden:
Herbed Cream Cheese and Celery
- any herbs you like (we harvested parsley, thyme, chives, and oregano)
- cream cheese or neufchatel cheese
- celery stalks
Mix up the herbs and cream cheese and smear it onto the celery, it’s as simple as that.
- carrots, grated
- purple cabbage, grated
- sunflower seeds
- chow mein noodles
- olive oil
- vinegar
Measure to your liking, mix, and enjoy!
