Our volunteers asked for more opportunities to learn about the racist and oppressive aspects of our food system. This session focuses on how the soda industry targets kids and people living in poverty, especially Black and Latino youth and communities.
Soda companies spend billions of dollars each year targeting advertisements and products towards kids and communities of color, and lobbying against health bills that aim to reduce soda consumption or improve diet. The beverages we drink have a large impact on the health of our bodies and the health of our communities. Racism and other oppressions mean that Black and Latino youth and communities often lack healthy beverage options, access to clean water, and access to affordable, nutrient-dense foods.
Together we will watch 30 minutes of short films followed by a facilitated discussion with Solid Ground volunteers and staff. There will be space to reflect in our personal food stories. We’d love to have you there!
In this event, we’ll focus on:
- The history of the soda industry’s targeting of Black and Latino youth and communities
- Our personal food stories and our collective health
- Action steps we can take moving forward
Please join us as we explore the ways corporate power in the food system impacts the overall health of our communities, and commit to find solutions to build a food system that works for all ! Free and open to all.
This event will have a limit of 50 attendees, and past Solid Ground volunteers will be prioritized.
This will be a live virtual event via Zoom. Register for the event for Zoom details.
