If you’re enrolled in Medicare, your once-a-year chance to make changes to your coverage is coming up on Sunday, October 15 through Thursday, December 7, 2023. Medicare options can be overwhelming, but fortunately there are volunteers available to give you free advice about choosing the best plan for you – and even how to pay for it. Check out this and upcoming editions of Resource Wire to find out how you can get help from Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA).

FREE ENGLISH, COMPUTER CLASSES  

WHEN: Walk-in registration held Monday, October 2 through Thursday, October 13. Class schedules vary.  

WHERE: Classes meet online or in-person at 700 Dearborn Place, Seattle, WA 98144. 

WHAT: The King County Job Training and Education Center is registering students now for free English, computer, and job-readiness classes. Technology assistance is available for those who need it.

NEW AUBURN RESOURCE CENTER 

WHEN: Wednesday, October 4, 10am

WHERE: The Outlet Collection, 1101 Outlet Collection Way, #1341, Auburn, WA 98001 

WHAT: One Stop Resource invites you to check out its new office at The Outlet Collection Seattle and learn about available resources, including: 

  • Free cellphones & tablets

AUBURN RESOURCE FAIR

WHAT: Join us for help getting access to free cell phones and resources for transportation, health insurance, basic food, and more.

GETTING YOUR LANDLORD TO MAKE REPAIRS 

WHEN:  Wednesday, October 11, 2023, 3-4:45pm

WHERE: Zoom; register for link.

WHAT: Are you having issues in your rental that need repair? Are you having a hard time getting your landlord to make repairs? This webinar will explain your tenant rights and what you need to do to request repairs from your landlord. A visiting attorney from the Tenant Law Center will also be on hand to help with answering questions.

FREE HELP WITH MEDICARE ENROLLMENT 

WHEN: Tuesday, October 24, and Monday, November 6, 2023, 1-3pm 

WHERE: Solid Ground, 1501 N 45th St, Seattle, WA 98103 

WHAT: Join us for a free, in-person Medicare Open Enrollment Workshop to learn how to navigate the system. We’ll cover: 

  • What you can do during Medicare Open Enrollment, which starts Sunday, October 15 this year. 
  • Choosing and changing plans. 
  • What Medigap plans are available. 
  • How to get help paying for Medicare.

HELP WITH BAD CREDIT

WHAT: Is your credit preventing you from obtaining a job, making a large purchase, or securing stable housing? This free credit counseling workshop from the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle may be for you!

~UPCOMING/CURRENT COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES & RESOURCES~

FREE MEDICAL CARE FOR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS 

WHEN: Wednesday, October 4, 2023, 10am-2pm

WHERE: Real Change, 96 S Main St, Seattle, WA 98104 

WHAT: King County’s Mobile Medical Program provides walk-in care for people who are living homeless (or were recently homeless) only. Please try to arrive at least one hour before the scheduled end time for the clinic. On rare occasions the clinic will close earlier than the scheduled time. Call the Mobile Van nursing lines if you would like to confirm the clinic end time for a particular day.

Please note: Sites and available services are subject to change due to Mobile Medical’s involvement in the COVID-19 response. Please check King County’s Mobile Medical Care webpage for the latest information, including upcoming dates in September.

VIRTUAL YOUTH RESOURCE FAIR  

WHEN: October 11, 2023, 3:30-6pm 

WHERE: Online; register for Zoom link 

WHAT: This is a great opportunity for youth 14 to 24 to learn valuable skills through college and career readiness workshops, as well as network with local employers and organizations. Get help with interview skills, resumes, college financial aid, and more. There will be giveaways throughout the event as well.

GET STOLEN FOOD BENEFITS BACK 

WHEN: Some claims must be filed by October 22, 2023.

WHAT: If your food benefits were stolen through skimming, cloning, or similar fraudulent activity, you may be able to get them replaced thanks to a recent act of Congress. 

Customers who had food benefits stolen between Oct. 1, 2022 and Aug. 22, 2023 have until Oct. 22, 2023 to submit a claim. Otherwise, they must submit the claim within 30 days of discovering the loss. 

Cash benefits cannot be replaced at this time, but customers are encouraged to continue to report theses thefts so they can be tracked. 

FILE YOUR CLAIM: Claims can be submitted in person in a Community Service Office, by phone through the Customer Service Contact Center (877.501.2233), online through MyDocs, or by mail or by fax of a completed DSHS Claim of Stolen EBT Benefits form.

CASH FOR YOUR FAMILY: GET YOUR WORKING FAMILIES TAX CREDIT 

WHEN: Apply by December 31, 2023 

WHAT: Washington state has already paid out more than $62 million to 84,000 individuals and families under the new Working Families Tax Credit. Individuals and families can receive up to $1,200 if they meet certain eligibility requirements. Applications will be accepted through the end of the year.
