This week is just FULL of resource fairs, hiring events, and other opportunities to find the resources you need. If we had to choose just one, we’d check out the Black History Month Event happening this weekend in Federal Way. Not only does it include a career and resource fair, this free event features the Seattle Buffalo Soldiers, film screenings, historic presentations, and other celebrations of Black history and culture. Read on for information about that event, plus scholarships for science camps, free food boxes, help for evicted renters, and more!

BLACK HISTORY MONTH JOB & RESOURCE FAIR 

WHEN: Saturday, February 24, 2024, 2-6pm 

WHERE: Federal Way High School, 30611 16th Ave S, Federal Way, WA 98003 

WHAT: This career and resource fair is part of a Black History Month Event celebrating young Black community leaders, activists, writers, entertainers, and athletes. The free event will also feature Black and African venders, the Seattle 10th Calvary Buffalo Soldiers, film screenings, entertainment, historic presentations, and more.

PORT OF SEATTLE TRAINING & RESOURCE FAIR  

WHEN: Wednesday, February 28, 9am-4pm

WHERE: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport SEA Conference Center. See Conference Center Location and Directions for driving and parking information.  

WHAT: The Port of Seattle Training & Resource Fair is a free event focused on career-training programs and resources in the Seattle and South King County area. Discover a wide range of training programs, resources, and career paths in the areas of automotive repair, aviation, construction, maritime, and more.

HOW TO FIND AN APARTMENT AFTER AN EVICTION

WHEN:  Wednesday, February 28, 2024, 5-6:30pm

WHAT: This is the final session of a three-part series on your housing search. We’ll focus on how you can…

  • rent with an eviction on your record
  • understand your rights
  • successfully navigate your way to find housing

A visiting attorney from the Tenant Law Center will also be on hand to help with answering questions. If you’re currently living in King County and being threatened with eviction, contact the Housing Justice Project for legal assistance at 206.267.7069 or hjpstaff@kcba.org.

FREE FOOD BOXES 

WHEN: Available for pickup Saturdays in Central Seattle and Sundays in South Seattle. Sign-up forms available Tuesdays at 7:30pm. 

WHAT: After a brief pause, Plant Based Food Share is again providing FREE weekly boxes full of healthy produce, grains, baked goods, bread, and more to anyone who needs them. To get a box, you might sign up the week before for pick-up on Saturdays in Central Seattle and Sundays in South Seattle. Sign-up forms for each weekend are posted online the previous Tuesday at 7:30pm.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SUMMER SCIENCE CAMPS 

WHEN: Applications due by March 25, 2024 

WHERE: Applications are now available for the Pacific Science Center’s Camps for Curious Minds Scholarship Program. This lottery-based programs offers youth in grades PreK-8 interested in science education opportunities to participate in one of PacSci’s week-long camp sessions at no cost. 

Campers qualify for a scholarship if they: 

  • Qualified for free or reduced lunch program for the 2023-2024 school year. 
  • Are in the foster care system currently, or were during the 2023-2024 school year. 
  • OR are in the care of parent/guardian enrolled in the food assistance program (SNAP) or other public assistance programs. 

TO APPLY: Fill out the Camps for Curious Minds 2024 Scholarship Application.

RESOURCE FAIR AT SEATTLE CENTRAL LIBRARY 

WHEN: Tuesday, March 5, 2024, 10-2pm 

WHAT: The Seattle Central Library is holding its first resource fair. Come by to learn about transportation, employment, harm reduction, mental health and medical resources. You can also make some art, sit for a portrait, and enjoy coffee and some light snacks. No registration required.

HEALTH & RESOURCE EVENTS

WHAT: A variety of organizations are holding events this week to help connect people with basic needs and services, including things like cell phones, bus passes, vaccines, health care screenings, employment resources, legal assistance, and more! 

Redmond resource center  

  • When: Wednesday, February 21, 2024, 2-4pm

  • What: Social Service representatives are here to help you with cash assistance, employment and training, education, housing, food assistance, health/medical care, legal assistance, mental health and substance use treatment, transportation, etc.

FREE MEDICAL CARE FOR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS 

WHEN: Various times and locations listed below

WHAT: King County’s Mobile Medical Program provides walk-in care for people who are living homeless (or were recently homeless) only. Please try to arrive at least one hour before the scheduled end time for the clinic. On rare occasions the clinic will close earlier than the scheduled time. Call the Mobile Van nursing lines if you would like to confirm the clinic end time for a particular day.

Please note: Sites and available services are subject to change due to Mobile Medical’s involvement in the COVID-19 response. Please check King County’s Mobile Medical Care webpage for the latest information, including upcoming dates in September.

FREE & LOW-COST VETERINARY CARE

WHEN: Various dates and times. See below.

WHAT: Seattle Veterinary Outreach and Washington Health Outreach provide veterinary care for free to people experiencing homelessness and at a reduced cost for people living on low incomes.

Veterinary care is provided on a first-come, first-served service. Pet owners are encouraged to arrive early to secure a place in line.

Services are reserved for those experiencing homelessness or living with a low income, which is verified at clinics. Pet owners should bring their SNAP, EBT, WIC, SSI, or TANF cards. Alternatively, a letter confirming that the pet owner is living in subsidized housing or receiving housing vouchers is also acceptable.

GREEN CAREER FAIR

WHAT: Meet in-demand employers in clean water, sustainable building, and green jobs! Attend and participate in hands-on demonstrations, break-out sessions, networking, resume help, and other skill building activities.

PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS FOR SEATTLE YOUTH 

WHEN: Internship period is July 8 – August 15, 2024. Applications due Tuesday, March 26, 2024. 

WHAT: The Seattle Youth Employment Program (SYEP) supports young people (ages 16 to 24) to increase their ability to pursue careers that pay well and are meaningful to them. SYEP’s Internship Program places young people in professional and/or structured paid work settings within City departments, local businesses, and nonprofit agencies to apply their knowledge, gain hands-on experience, develop professional connections, and build their resume. 

To be eligible applicants must be: 

  • 16-24 years old 
  • A resident of Seattle OR a student in Seattle Public School or Seattle Colleges
  • Member of a household with income at or below 80% Area Median Income

MAXIMIZE YOUR REFUND: FREE HELP WITH TAXES 

WHEN: Walk-in help available through Sunday, April 21, 2024. Virtual Tax Assistance available online starting Thursday, February 1, 2024. 

WHERE: Locations across King County. Check out this map of United Way In-Person Tax Sites and this list of Seattle Public Library Branches offering Free In-person Tax Help. 

WHAT: Get free help filing your taxes from the United Way of King County (UWKC) and AARP so you can get back more of your hard-earned money. Their IRS-certified volunteers can help you understand your tax situation, plus take advantage of credits like the Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, and the Working Families Tax Credit to maximize your refund. 

  • UWKC: If you make less than $80,000 a year (or less than $96,000 for non-single filers), UWKC’s volunteers are ready to meet with you in person at locations across King County, including libraries, community centers, and food banks. Appointments are not required, but please aim to arrive no later than 45 minutes before closing time. Virtual Tax Assistance available starting February 1, 2024. 
  • AARP: The Seattle Public Library is collaborating with AARP to offer free tax assistance at nine branches through Tax Day, Monday, April 15, 2024. Hours vary and appointments are preferred in some locations.
