HAPPY NEW YEAR! If your resolution is to find a job that pays better, we’ve got two great opportunities to learn skills for a new career while getting paid at the same time. And if you’ve been looking for a chance to get a housing voucher in Seattle, we’ve got big news for you too! Read on to learn all about that, plus upcoming resource fairs, hiring events, and free clinics for people experiencing homelessness and their pets. Check it out!

~NEW THIS EDITION~

SEATTLE RE-OPENING APPLICATIONS FOR HOUSING VOUCHERS 

WHEN: Applications open Wednesday, January 17, 2024 

WHAT: The Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) is re-opening open applications to families and individuals for a chance to receive a Housing Choice Voucher (formerly known as a Section 8 voucher). The Housing Choice Voucher program provides rental assistance for people with low incomes to rent from landlords throughout the Seattle rental market.  

Important note: Applying for a voucher is always free. Any website that requires a fee to apply is a scam.

Under SHA’s new process, applicants on the list will be chosen at random when vouchers are available. The number of applicants selected in each drawing will vary, depending on the number of vouchers available. The chance of being drawn is the same no matter when households apply.

PAID CONSTRUCTION TRAINING FOR YOUTH 

WHEN: January 8 through June 14, 2024, Monday-Friday, 9am-3:30pm 

WHERE: South Seattle College, Georgetown Campus, 6737 Corson Ave South, Seattle, Building B 

WHAT: YouthBuild is recruiting young people interested in the construction trade for its next six-month training session starting Monday, January 8, 2024. While in the program, participants earn a weekly stipend while studying for their high school diploma or equivalent and gaining skills needed to join the workforce. Successful participants graduate with six industry certifications and thirty-eight college credits. After graduation, they also receive nine months of follow-up support, including case management, resume and interview tips, and job placement assistance. 

To be eligible, participants must: 

  • Be 18-24 years old 
  • Have not yet received their high school diploma or GED 
  • Be eligible for food stamps

PAID TRAINING TO BE A MEDICAL ASSISTANT 

WHEN: Next info session Tuesday, January 9, 2024, 5:30-6:30pm. Program starts April 2024. 

WHERE: Positions in Seattle, Everett, Lynnwood, Bothell and Redmond. 

WHAT: Even if you have no medical background, this program allows you to become a Medical Assistant in 14 to 15 months while also receiving pay and benefits as a full-time employee at Kaiser Permanente. When you graduate, you’ll have a guaranteed job as a Medical Assistant. 

To be eligible, applicants must be 18 or older, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and be able to perform physical duties. Before starting the program, applicants must pass an assessment in college-level math and English or have completed relevant courses.

HELP WITH BAD CREDIT  

WHEN: Tuesday, January 16, 8am-5pm 

WHERE: Online; register for link. 

WHAT: Is your credit preventing you from obtaining a job, making a large purchase, or securing stable housing? This free credit counseling workshop from the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle may be for you!

NEW TO MEDICARE? UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS 

WHEN: Friday, January 26, 2024, 1-4pm 

WHERE: Virtual on Zoom. See registration link below.

WHAT: Learn about all the parts of Medicare so you can make an informed decision about your Medicare choices. We’ll discuss… 

  • Medicare A, B, C, and D 
  • Enrollment 
  • Medicare benefits and options 
  • Medigaps (supplemental plans) and Medicare Advantage plans 
  • Help paying for Medicare 
  • Medicare fraud 

This event will be presented by Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) Program volunteers. SHIBA provides free, unbiased, and confidential assistance with Medicare health care choices.

~HAPPENING THIS WEEK~

LEARN YOUR RIGHTS AS A RENTER

WHEN:  Wednesday, January 10, 2024, 3-4:45pm

WHERE: Zoom; register for link.

WHAT: Discuss tenants’ rights and procedures under the Washington State Residential Landlord-Tenant Act. Learn how to make a formal repair request and when you can break your lease.

A visiting attorney from the Tenant Law Center will also be on hand to help with answering questions. If you’re currently living in King County and being threatened with eviction, contact the Housing Justice Project for legal assistance at 206.267.7069 or hjpstaff@kcba.org.

HEALTH & RESOURCE FAIRS 

WHAT: A variety of organizations are holding events this week to help connect people with basic needs and services, including things like cell phones, bus passes, vaccines, health care screenings, employment resources, legal assistance, and more!

FREE MEDICAL CARE FOR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS 

WHEN: Various times and locations – See below

WHAT: King County’s Mobile Medical Program provides walk-in care for people who are living homeless (or were recently homeless) only. Please try to arrive at least one hour before the scheduled end time for the clinic. On rare occasions the clinic will close earlier than the scheduled time. Call the Mobile Van nursing lines if you would like to confirm the clinic end time for a particular day.

Please note: Sites and available services are subject to change due to Mobile Medical’s involvement in the COVID-19 response. Please check King County’s Mobile Medical Care webpage for the latest information, including upcoming dates in September.

FREE & LOW-COST VETERINARY CARE

WHEN: Various times and locations – See below

WHAT: Seattle Veterinary Outreach and Washington Health Outreach provide veterinary care for free to people experiencing homelessness and at a reduced cost for people living on low incomes.

Veterinary care is provided on a first-come, first-served service. Pet owners are encouraged to arrive early to secure a place in line.

Services are reserved for those experiencing homelessness or living with a low income, which is verified at clinics. Pet owners should bring their SNAP, EBT, WIC, SSI, or TANF cards. Alternatively, a letter confirming that the pet owner is living in subsidized housing or receiving housing vouchers is also acceptable.

MLK DAY RESOURCE AND OPPORTUNITY FAIR

FREE COLLEGE TUITION FOR SEATTLE STUDENTS 

WHEN: Applications are available now and due by Friday, February 16, 2024. 

WHAT: Seattle Promise is a college tuition and success program available to all graduating Seattle public high school students regardless of grade point average (GPA), income, ability, or country of birth.   

Under the Seattle Promise program, you may be eligible for: 

  • Free tuition at any of the Seattle Colleges: North Seattle College, Seattle Central College or South Seattle College for up to two years, 90 college credits or a student’s first degree, whichever comes first. 
  • Equity scholarships, which provide flexible funding to students, for books, transportation, housing, etc. for those with financial need. 
  • Student support and advising beginning in the junior year of high school and lasting through completion of a degree, certificate, credential or transfer to a four-year institution. 

High school seniors planning to attend college in the fall of 2024 must apply to Seattle Promise and the college of their choice by February 16, 2024
