It’s tax season! Make sure you get the biggest refund possible this year by working with the volunteers at the United Way of King County. It’s free as long as you meet income requirements, and it’s available both online and in person at multiple locations across the county. Read on to learn more about the program, plus find youth summer internship opportunities, job training programs, free legal help, and more!

FREE TAX HELP 

WHEN: Tax returns due Tuesday, April 15, 2025 

WHAT: If you make less than $80,000 a year (or less than $96,000 for non-single filers), the United Way of King County is available to do your taxes for FREE so you can get back more of your hard-earned money. Volunteers help you understand your tax situation, plus take advantage of credits like the Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, and the Working Families Tax Credit to maximize your refund.  

There are three ways to get FREE tax help: 

  • In-Person Assistance: Check out the tax site map below to find a tax site that’s most convenient for you. All tax sites are first come, first serve. No appointments necessary! 
  • Virtual Tax Assistance: Interested in filing your taxes virtually but don’t feel comfortable doing it on your own? We’re happy to help! 
  • File Your Own Taxes For Free: Feeling good about filing your own taxes but want to do it for free, without any hidden fees? We’ve got you.

SEATTLE SUMMER INTERNSHIPS 

WHEN: Apply by March 21, 2025. Internships period is July 9 through August 26, 2025. 

WHAT: Participants in the Seattle Internship Program are placed in professional and/or structured paid work settings within City departments, local businesses, and non-profit agencies to apply their knowledge, gain hands-on experience, develop professional connections, and build their resume. Interns earn $20.76/hr.

FREE AVIATION TRAINING FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS 

WHEN: Online info night Tuesday, February 25, 2025, 6:15-7:45pm. Classes held September 2025 through June 2026, Monday through Thursday, 3:45-6pm. 

WHERE: The Museum of Flight, 9404 E Marginal Way S, Seattle, WA 98108 

WHAT: Aeronautical Science Pathway (ASP) is a FREE program for High School Juniors and Seniors who want to become Professional Pilots or work in Drone Operations, Air Traffic Control, Airport Management, Airline Dispatch or many other Aviation Operations Management fields. Includes six college-level courses and the opportunity to earn three high school credits and 30 college credits each year.

STAY OUT OF THE COLD 

WHEN: Through Friday, February 14, 2025

WHAT: With low temperatures and snow in the forecast for the next few days, the King County Regional Homelessness Authority is expanding hours and capacity at shelters and warming centers across the county. You can find a list of available shelters on the authority’s Severe Weather Response page.

~HAPPENING THIS WEEK~

HOW TO OVERCOME BARRIERS TO HOUSING

WHEN: Wednesday, February 12, 2025, 3-4:45pm

WHERE: Online. Register for link.

WHAT: This webinar will focus on overcoming the barriers that prevent tenants from successfully getting into rental housing. Solid Ground tenant counselors will discuss:

  • Tenant credit information
  • Evictions and orders of limited dissemination
  • Dealing with past debt
  • Criminal history on a tenant’s record
  • Landlord discrimination

A visiting attorney from the Tenant Law Center will also be on hand to help with answering questions. If you’re currently living in King County and being threatened with eviction, contact the Housing Justice Project for legal assistance at 206.267.7069 or hjpstaff@kcba.org.

FREE LEGAL CLINIC 

WHEN: Wednesday, February 12, 2024, 4-8pm (intake 4-6pm) 

WHERE: El Centro de la Raza, Historic Building, Top Floor, 2524 16th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98144 

WHAT: Volunteer attorneys from the Latina/o Bar Association of Washington (LBAW) and the community, along with volunteer interpreters, provide free 30-minute consultations on topics such as immigration, personal injury, worker’s rights, family law, and more. Availability depends on attorney expertise at each clinic. 

Space is limited. Consultations are first-come, first-served in-person, and there’s no guarantee of being seen due to high demand and specific legal matters.

FREE MEDICAL CARE FOR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS 

WHEN: Various times and locations listed below

WHAT: King County’s Mobile Medical Program provides walk-in care for people who are living homeless (or were recently homeless) only. Please try to arrive at least one hour before the scheduled end time for the clinic. On rare occasions the clinic will close earlier than the scheduled time. Call the Mobile Van nursing lines if you would like to confirm the clinic end time for a particular day.

Please note: Sites and available services are subject to change due to Mobile Medical’s involvement in the COVID-19 response. Please check King County’s Mobile Medical Care webpage for the latest information, including upcoming dates in September.

FREE & LOW-COST VETERINARY CARE

WHEN: Various dates and times. See below.

WHAT: Seattle Veterinary Outreach, Washington Health Outreach, and Doney Coe Pet Clinic provide veterinary care for free or at a reduced cost to the pets of people experiencing homelessness and or living on low incomes.

Veterinary care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Pet owners are encouraged to arrive early to secure a place in line.

Services are reserved for those experiencing homelessness or living with a low income, which is verified at clinics. Pet owners should bring their SNAP, EBT, WIC, SSI, or TANF cards. Alternatively, a letter confirming that the pet owner is living in subsidized housing or receiving housing vouchers is also acceptable.

~UPCOMING COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES & RESOURCES~

GET YOUR WORKING FAMILIES TAX CREDIT 

WHEN: Saturday, February 1, 2025 

WHAT: Washington state families can apply for the 2024 Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC) starting February 1, 2025. The WFTC is a refund of the sales taxes you pay all year and is available to low-income Washington families regardless of whether they pay incomes taxes. If you’re not sure if you’re eligible, use the WFTC eligibility checker.  

It’s also not too late to apply for tax years 2022 and 2023. So far, more than 177,000 applicants have received a 2023 WFTC payments, which averaged around $751 per applicant.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AS AN IMMIGRANT 

WHEN: Tuesday, February 27, 2025, 5pm

WHAT: This webinar from the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project will cover basic information and updates on recent changes to immigration law. We will have computer-generated captions in English and in many other languages.

FREE IT CAREER TRAINING

KNOW YOUR IMMIGRATION RIGHTS

WHAT: Join the Northwest Immigrants Right Project and the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness for a training on what to do if Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) comes to your home or workplace. This training will cover: 

  • Basic Overview of the Immigration System 
  • What we know about the new Administration’s policies 
  • Know Your Rights 
  • Safety Planning 
  • Referrals and Questions

FREE MEDICAL, DENTAL, & VISION CARE 

WHEN: April 24 – 27, 2025 

WHAT: The Seattle Center will host its annual four-day FREE Seattle/King County Clinic on April 24-27 this year, offering medical, dental, and vision care for anyone who needs it – no insurance, ID, or proof of residency required. Available services include: 

  • Dental: Treatment for pain or discomfort, known or suspected cavities, swollen gums, and broken teeth.
  • Vision: Vision screening, complete eye exams, prescription eyeglasses.
  • Medical: Primary care, x-rays, mammograms, ultrasounds, select lab tests, immunizations, foot care, dermatology, physical and occupational (hand, wrist, elbow) therapy, acupuncture, nutrition, behavioral health, and more.

FEDERAL STUDENT AID APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED

WHEN: Applications due June 30, 2025. 

WHAT: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now open for all students and families applying for the 2025–2026 school year. While the final FAFSA deadline isn’t until June 30, 2025, students should apply as early as possible because some kinds of financial support are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Completing the FAFSA takes about an hour.

HELP FOR MIGRANTS & ASYLUM-SEEKERS 

WHEN: Services available through June 30, 2025 

WHAT: The newly launched Washington Migrant and Asylum-Seekers Support project is designed to meet the basic needs of people who have recently arrived in the United States and Washington state but are ineligible for federal refugee services. Participants may be eligible for housing support, immigration-related legal services, and culturally responsive case management. Participants are also connected to medical, education, and job-training resources that are available in the community.
