Welcome to Resource Wire for July 24 – 31, 2024!

If you know any young adults who are struggling with both addiction and housing, we’ve got news about a new program from Friends of Youth that may be able to help. It’s called Passageways to Recovery Employment and Education, and it includes help with phone bills, transportation, education, clothes, and more. Read on to learn about the program, plus find info about upcoming job training opportunities, resource fairs, housing help, and more!

~NEW THIS EDITION~

HELP FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER 

WHAT: Passageways to Recovery Employment and Education (PREE) is a new free program for young adults 18 to 24 who are experiencing housing instability (including homelessness) and substance use disorder. PREE provides funding to address roadblocks to recovery and support for achieving education and employment goals, including: 

  • $50 Visa gift card upon enrollment and 3 months phone bill paid incrementally
  • Short-term education and certification funding
  • Transportation (gas cards, bus passes, short-term insurance installments, and small car repairs on case-by-case basis) 
  • Interview and work clothing.
  • Identification support 
  • Tools required for successful completion of vocational education (books, equipment, and tools)

FREE TRAINING FOR IT SUPPORT JOBS 

WHEN: Apply by Wednesday, July 31, 2024. Full-time 13-week course held Monday through Friday starting August 19. 

WHERE: In-person classes at 2101 4th Ave., Suite 600, Seattle, WA 98121 

WHAT: IT Support training provides an opportunity to earn the Google IT support professional certificate and the CompTIA A+ certification and equips students with knowledge to fill a wide range of entry-level technology jobs. Tuition, materials, hardware, and exam fees are free. No experience required, but applicants must be at least 18 and living on low income.

SHORELINE COMMUNITY RESOURCE FAIR 

WHEN: Thursday, August 29, 2024 , 10am-2pm 

WHERE: Shoreline Library, 345 NE 175th St., Shoreline WA 98155 

WHAT: Social service providers will be available to help connect attendees with resources such as healthcare, education, legal clinics, and more! Registration not required.

~HAPPENING THIS WEEK~

HOW TO FIND AN APARTMENT THAT WORKS FOR YOU

WHEN: Wednesday, July 24, 2024, 5-6:30pm

WHAT: Learn the basics of housing search, including:

  • where to search
  • tenant screening
  • best tips for finding a rental
  • tax credit housing
  • holding deposits
  • and overcoming rental barriers like past evictions or criminal history

A visiting attorney from the Tenant Law Center will also be on hand to help with answering questions. If you’re currently living in King County and being threatened with eviction, contact the Housing Justice Project for legal assistance at 206.267.7069 or hjpstaff@kcba.org.

HEALTH & RESOURCE EVENTS

WHAT: A variety of organizations are holding events this week to help connect people with basic needs and services, including things like cell phones, bus passes, vaccines, health care screenings, employment resources, legal assistance, and more! 

LGBTQIA+ housing resource fair

  • When: Wednesday, July 31, 2024, 2-4pm 
  • Where: Redmond Library, 15990 NE 85th St, Redmond, WA 98052     
  • What: Social Service representatives are here to help you with cash assistance, employment and training, education, housing, food assistance, health/medical care, legal assistance, mental health and substance use treatment, transportation, etc.

FREE MEDICAL CARE FOR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS 

WHEN: Various times and locations listed below

WHAT: King County’s Mobile Medical Program provides walk-in care for people who are living homeless (or were recently homeless) only. Please try to arrive at least one hour before the scheduled end time for the clinic. On rare occasions the clinic will close earlier than the scheduled time. Call the Mobile Van nursing lines if you would like to confirm the clinic end time for a particular day.

Please note: Sites and available services are subject to change due to Mobile Medical’s involvement in the COVID-19 response. Please check King County’s Mobile Medical Care webpage for the latest information, including upcoming dates in September.

FREE & LOW-COST VETERINARY CARE

WHEN: Various dates and times. See below.

WHAT: Seattle Veterinary Outreach, Washington Health Outreach, and Doney Coe Pet Clinic provide veterinary care for free or at a reduced cost to the pets of people experiencing homelessness and or living on low incomes.

Veterinary care is provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Pet owners are encouraged to arrive early to secure a place in line.

Services are reserved for those experiencing homelessness or living with a low income, which is verified at clinics. Pet owners should bring their SNAP, EBT, WIC, SSI, or TANF cards. Alternatively, a letter confirming that the pet owner is living in subsidized housing or receiving housing vouchers is also acceptable.

FREE LEGAL HELP

WHAT: This free bilingual legal clinic offers pro bono legal aid that can level the playing field for individuals who cannot afford professional legal consultations. Help available on a first-come, first-served basis in English and Spanish.

HELP WITH BAD CREDIT

HELP KEEPING KIDS FED THIS SUMMER 

WHEN: New SUN Bucks cards will be mailed starting in June. Applications accepted through August 31, 2024. 

WHAT: Washington parents may be able to get a little extra help keeping their kids fed this summer thanks to a new program called SUN Bucks. 

Under the program, parents will receive $120 per eligible child to spend on food. The money will be loaded onto SUN Bucks cards that will be mailed out starting in June. SUN Bucks are separate from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or any other food benefits you may receive.  

Some children will automatically be enrolled in SUN Bucks and others will need to apply. Applications will be accepted through August 31, 2024.

$200 OFF YOUR ELECTRICITY BILL 

WHEN: Applications due by September 15, 2024. 

WHAT: If you pay your own electricity bill, you may be eligible for a one-time $200 credit if you meet income requirements. Applying for the credit is quick and easy.

FREE AIR CONDITIONING UNITS 

WHAT: You may be able to get a free A/C unit this summer thanks to Byrd Barr’s Energy Assistance programs. To qualify, you must first be approved for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). 

You may also be able to get help paying energy bills, refilling oil tanks, and repairing or replacing furnaces.
